Kevin's Detailed Review of Hurst's NCLEX Course

January 26, 2016 by Kevin Pan

Not sure whether Hurst's Review is worth a few hundred dollars worth of your hard-earned money?

I'd feel the same way.

But now you don't have to worry:

I was able to get full access to Hurst Now, Hurst's online NCLEX Review.

I watched hours of video, looked through all their written material, practiced NCLEX questions, and took their online learning system for a test run.

Now I'm going to lay it all out for you: the good and the bad.

By the way, if you're thinking of taking their live review, my review will still apply.

Hurst's online review mirrors the content and notes of the live review.

Since their live review mirrors their online review, this will still help you get an idea of what to expect.

Here we go!

Why Hurst's Introduction Captured My Attention

The first video in their course was made by none other than Marlene Hurst herself.

I must say, she is full of charm.

The first thing you'll notice is her southern accent - and it's quite an accent. In fact, most of the Hurst instructors had southern accents.

I was glad to have the subtitles. To Hurst's credit, all of their videos also have subtitles.

Still, I have to say:

She reminded me of some of my favorite teachers and instructors: brimming with the confidence only years and years of experience can give you, yet still empathetic and comforting.

She was full of common sense: the kind that you don't know until you hear it.

Here was the kicker, though:

She was just downright funny!

There's only one person that wants you to pass more than we do and that's... ...your mother

She made me laugh out loud more than a few times in that 30 minute video.

But I learned something very important about Hurst Review.

Hurst's Videos Were Surprising. Here's Why:

I've watched Khan Academy videos and countless more NCLEX videos on YouTube and other NCLEX sites.

Few match the professionalism and production quality, and none of them were able to catch my attention better than Hurst's.

There are the three major reasons why Hurst's videos impressed me.

  • All the fundamental concepts (a lot of stuff that I've forgotten since I've graduated) were explained so well, so simply, and so efficiently.

  • Each video had a different instructor and they must have been coached well, because every single one spoke like radio personalities.

  • Not only that, but I came into this expecting to see a recording of their instructors teaching one of their live sessions or something like that.

    Nope: way better.

  • Each video was actually made for video. An instructor is facing the camera and making eye contact with you, not just some audience.

8 of Hurst's NCLEX Instructors

Imagine it:

Here I am, already a nurse, and I was able to watch through 8 videos (each about 40 minutes long) without feeling like crap. I relearned fundamental concepts that I had forgotten, and I didn't suffer doing it!

That's some good video.

There are some things about Hurst that I didn't quite enjoy, though.

One Thing About Hurst That Will Affect Your Wallet:

Hurst likes your money. I can't put it any other way - sorry Hurst people, if you're reading this!

They like it and they want more of it.

They give you 14 days to watch their videos. After that, cough up some more bucks to extend your access.

Want some coaching help, some closer support and some assignments? Introducing Hurst Elevate! It's the NCLEX review you buy after your NCLEX Review.

In their defense, even if you got all the add-ons, the price is still less than the most expensive NCLEX Reviews (Rachell Allen *cough* six hundred dollars *cough*).

Plus, one can argue that Hurst does deserve all that money you give them (you'll have to read on to find out why).

Some Other Critiques About Hurst's Online System

I have some things I want to gripe about Hurst's learning system.

Most of it has to do with the way it's set up:

Each video comes with its own FAQ page - frequently asked questions about the topics covered in the video. A lot of clinical questions and answers are here, and it's actually pretty well covered.

But when you click on the FAQ page, it takes you there without opening a new window, so you lose your place in the video you were watching. You can't follow the FAQ's side by side unless you right-click and 'Open In New Tab' the link.

Just a little inconvenient...

To add to the clunkiness, there's a button so you can ask a clinical question about the video. But if you pause the video THEN press it, it starts the video going again! If you press it as the video is running, it pauses it, as intended. But who does that?

Not me - so that was a tiny annoyance.

Here's the icing to the clunkiness cake:

You get no feedback from the questions that you ask. You press enter, the pop-up disappears, and I guess it gets shot off to Hurst's pile of old, dusty questions from students.

There's no email confirmation of your question.

I eventually did track them down via email.

To their credit, they answered me back within a day. But still - isn't there a better way to get an answer?

Yes - by buying "Hurst Elevate" for another $150 bucks.

In their defense again, I did test their technical support by emailing them about my videos sometimes going into cardiac arrest and staying unresponsive despite 30 clicks followed by 2 refreshes (CPR joke).

They got back to me really quick with helpful suggestions. So that's good.

That concludes my critiques for Hurst - which isn't all that bad, when you look at some real duds like Brilliant Nurse.

What's Best About Hurst Review

An NCLEX Pill. Buy it, take it in, and pass the NCLEX. Hurst says there's no such thing.

But that's exactly what Hurst Review tries to be (if you follow their instructions, that is).

How? They teach you content. But not just any content, Marlene says. Core content.

"Rule!" Marlene says. "It's the stuff you need to know without a doubt and without hesitation if you want to even have a chance of passing the first time!"

They really do stick to the fundamentals.

I've got more good news! You cannot know everything in the whole wide world!

Everything in the core content videos could have been found in the big fat Fundamentals of Nursing book sitting by you somewhere.

But their videos are anything but big and fat...

All the unnecessary fluff and fat is trimmed off, they say. And it's true - it's a lean, mean NCLEX machine.

I signed in and was presented with a puny menu with 5 links. Here, look:

Hurst Review's Dashboard Page. This is it, y'all!

Yet, Hurst says that's all you need. How can they say that?

I believe it comes down to the old quality vs quantity quandary.

For NCLEX Review, overwhelming quantity can be crippling.

Surely you've at some point felt overwhelmed at all the resources available.

Tons of free videos on the web, tons of free practice questions, all the notes you took, all your textbooks, all your study guides, tons of too much of everything!

Even a lot of paid NCLEX Reviews simply lay out tons of content in exchange for monthly payments: so the more the merrier, right?

But here's what I think happens to a lot of people:

They study the wrong things. They go into too much detail (because it really never ends).

Or, they don't study systematically, because there's just so much material.

Worst of all, some people just get overwhelmed and procrastinate more!

Hurst seems to offers a way out of this maze:

"Just study what we tell you, because all you need to know is what's in these 25 videos," Hurst says.

You don't need hundreds of videos to pass the NCLEX, Hurst says. You just need to master the fundamentals: and we have them laid out right here.

Marlene Hurst says this right from minute one:

"We are about mastering a certain amount of content instead of knowing a whole bunch of stuff a little!"

And just like that, the weight of a thousand pounds of NCLEX uncertainty is lifted off of your shoulders and your path is clear.

My Final Verdict: Hurst Gives You a Clear Path to Pass the NCLEX

There has to be a reason Hurst Review has ended up rising above and becoming so successful.

In fact, they boast an impressive pass rate on their website:

Hurst Review: 98% Pass Rate for first attempts by U.S. Educated students taking NCLEX-RN, 99.49% for NCLEX-PN

To sum up the screenshot, Hurst's Pass rate was 98% for RNs and over 99% for LPNs (for first-time test takers who went to schools in the U.S.)

In contrast, the average pass rates released by NCSBN in 2014 was 82% for those same types of students - so this is a significant claim!

This is why I think they are able to do this:

It's because they were able to whittle down all that NCLEX information into such a digestible package. Core Content.

Here's another clue I could tell Hurst's Review was so well-planned:

In the introduction video, Marlene tells us to "watch everything in the order that we give it to you! Everything is there in that order for a reason!"

Lo and behold, in the Management and Delegation video (which is one of the last videos on the list), they touch back on it.

Pam, the instructor for that video, explains that in order to manage and delegate correctly, you first need to know your core content.

She referenced back to Marlene's original words: "Remember in the introduction video, where Marlene tells you that every lecture is placed in a certain order in this review for a reason?"

Do you know what this must means?

It means Hurst didn't just make these videos willy-nilly. Somebody (or a group of them) must have sat down, thought about what they want to teach you in what order, probably scripted the whole thing, and only then started making the actual videos.

This isn't just a bunch of instructors each teaching their topics and putting it all in one place online.

It's a systematic lesson plan made by a team of people working very closely together. This is a professional product.

Not only that, Hurst has a dead simple but effective way at approaching strategy:

"If an NCLEX Question says something you've never heard of, nobody else has either!" is a favorite pearl of wisdom - and true.

Hurst's solution when you stumble upon a tough NCLEX question?

Number One: Know your core content like the back of your hand. You might have never heard of the obscure medication that's in one of the answer choices, but you'll know enough from core content to have a clue about the patient's needs.

Number Two: "think NCLEX-y." Get inside the heads of those NCLEX people - it's not that hard, and Hurst tells you how.

It's all about what the NCLEX wants to find out about you - (I won't tell you, you'll have to find out from Aunt Marlene's introduction).

Armed with this information, she says, you'll have a fighting chance to ace anything NCLEX throws at you.

I couldn't help but believe her.

I hope this in-depth report was helpful for you!

However, I still can't give you a complete picture. Not everyone will experience what I experienced.

That's why I want YOU students to write reviews!

Read reviews from real students who've been through Hurst's NCLEX review. Those will be your source of truth.

Good luck on the NCLEX!

Kevin

The over the phone technical support is useless. Every time i call, i get the same women who keeps telling me the same thing which is that she will transfer me, and then i get hung up on. There is almost always nobody available to talk, they dont seem like real customer support, there is no phone tree to go through to make sure you get to the right person, and i have been trying now for an hour and a half to get a hold of someone and have only spoken with that one women twice. every single other time it asks me to leave a voicemail. i've never heard of a voicemail being asked for when i call a customer support or technical support line. I've left a dozen messages and emails with no replies. my questinos are regarding the videos and what is available. on the list it mentions 10 videos under the speciality section, but i only have 7 and 2 are exactly the same. they are different people, but the paperwork and material is exatly the same. the only difference is the page number on the bottom of each sheet. i've also noticed some of the videos are out of order, and there are page numbers that are skipped. for example, the very first video starts on page 3. whats on pages 1 and 2? there are other sections that jump anywhere between 5 and 10 pages ahead. some page numbers ovcerlap so im not sure how to place them in order. these are the questions i'm trying to find answers to but i cant get a hold of anyone..........

Hurst review is actually pretty insulting to LPN's. I dont know if its different in other states... but it MA, LPNS do a lot. I actually got questions wrong on the hurst q review because they make it seem like LPNS do not do anything. They say LPNS cant assess, teach, help with care plans???? Im so confused....in school they never said anything like that to us. We were always taught we CAN do those things....

I graduated from a BSN program in Augusta, Ga. Took the live Hurst review for 3 days after graduation. I feel that the teaching content for the Hurst NCLEX Review course was NOT applicable to the NCLEX. It did not prepare me well enough and I had to use other resources to get an understanding. Yes, I learned this information in nursing school, but sometimes a refresher course is needed and this is what I was expecting from Hurst, but DID NOT receive. The Hurst NCLEX Review Course was NOT worth the time or MONEY!!! Please find another source to use and do not waste your money on this useless review. Yes, I passed NCLEX the first time, but it definitely was not because of Hurst.

I graduated in December of 2015 with my BSN, RN from a nursing school in Kansas city, Missouri. I used the Online version of Hurst Review for about 3.5 months. Prior to that I did sit for the exam 1 time before but was not successful in passing since my core content was weak. I was torn between another review as well but went ahead and chose Hurst since it was a bit more cost friendly and it was pretty much what I needed since I didn't know my material well enough. A lot of the questions and content on the NCLEX I had, I either saw or read in my notes. I felt very confident and comfortable going into my exam the 2nd time around since I knew my core content. The Hurst Review was very easy to go through and was very organized according to each body system. I felt like Hurst was worth every penny and they helped me tremendously! I probably wouldn't have passed the 2nd time without it!

I was a student at Wharton County Junior College- Vocational Nursing Program (Graduated in August 2015) and I passed my boards on the first try thanks to Hurst Review!!!

I bought the online hurst review about 3 weeks prior to my test date. For maybe the first week or week and a half i was working full time so i was only able to watch the videos when i had time, so maybe two vids a day. About 8 days prior to my test i was no longer working so i could devote all day everyday to studying for the NCLEX-PN. From 6am until about midnight i was watching the vids, taking notes, doing tons of practice questions from Saunders review book (which helps tremendously). Maternity was a weakness of mine in nursing school so i made it a priority to make it a strength and i did.

I feel kaplan relies too much on strategies and Hurst is all about CORE CONTENT. if you dont know the core content and know what you're looking at in the question how are you going to apply the strategies and expect to get the question correct? Therefore, Hurst is much better at preparing students than kaplan.

Since i did the hurst online review i was unsure how i would do on the NCLEX itself. Everyone knows hurst has a 99% pass rating when it comes to their in person review, but i didnt know about the online review.

Hurst is definitely worth the money you pay for it. I paid $250 for the online review and it was worth every penny. The $350 in person review is definitely worth the money as well.

I heard other people say they learned more with hurst review than in nursing school itself, and they were completely right. My school was AMAZING and has a great reputation but hurst put things together that i hadnt seen before. hurst helps you connect the dots and teaches the root cause and why symptoms and different things happen.

I would say i watched each and every video 3-4 times. on average the vids are 45min long. That may seem like a lot but its worth it. And the vids are so interactive and the instructors are amusing so its not like a boring lecture that you have to force yourself to sit through.

And ladies and gentlemen its completely normal to feel as though you failed once you leave. I definitely felt like that until i did the PVT (Pearson Vue Trick) an hour after finishing my test and i saw the good pop up.

SURE WAY TO PASS NCLEX ON THE FIRST TRY:

     - WATCH EACH HURST VID 3-4 TIMES

     - SAUNDERS REVIEW BOOK ONLINE QUESTIONS (100-300 A DAY)

tbh i didnt even read the saunders book. but i did tons of the online questions every day and read the rationales.

With the Hurst Q-Review do NOT get discouraged if you dont do well! out of the 3 hurst q review tests only one was above a 75 and i still passed the state boards on the first try.

GOOD LUCK!!!

I graduated in Systems Plus College Foundation in the Philippines with a degree of Bachelors of Science in Nursing 3 years ago that was on 2012. I Would like to thank Hurst Online Review for changing my way of thinking on how to think critically and for giving the information that I need to pass the NCLEX RN exam. Hurst help me a lot with the lectures because they explained everything in detail. The Q bank helps me a lot to prepare for the exam because it enhances my critical thinking skills . Fifth day materials are very helpful too and the NCLEX teaching strategies really help me so much too. Aunt Marlene word of wisdom is the best!!! . I took the exam twice and finally I passed. Hurst review is the best, they made the discussion enjoyable and easy to understand.  The review is so convenient because I can watch and listen to the videos wherever I go, I am working as a full time CNA and still manage to passed. They are very reliable when I asked questions they answered be right away without waiting  for long time. I paid $300 for online and an additional $50 for an extension of one month And I would say that it is so worth it. I never thought I would pass the exam because I am not a test taker but because of hurst I made it. I will definitely recommend Hurst to my friends. For those who are unsuccessful with the exam just hang in there, I would say trust in the Lord and of course take hurst review and do some questions and never let the day go by without answering questions. I've used 5th edition Saunders cd for additional questions and most especially a lot of prayers and always believe in yourself. If I can do it you can do it too. I can't thank you all enough, thanks to all the lecturers and most especially to Aunt Marlene, more power and God bless Hurst Review Services.👌🏽👌🏽👌😀😀🙏🙏 Josephine Agrabio-Thornton BSN, RN

I graduated from nursing school May of 2014. I first tried Kaplan and did not succeed. I was not able to apply the tree to the questions on the nclex. I spent a lot of time researching other nclex review programs and came across Hurst. What I liked most about Hurst was that there was an option for a Live Review. I learn best in the classroom. So, I took the live review on Penn's Campus. The teachers were enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and very helpful. Hurst makes you think critically. They stress how important it is to know the content. If you dont understand what is wrong with your patient how can you fix the problem. Every nclex question is an emergeny there are no happy nclex questions! I went into the test with this thought process, so 265 questions later I AM A NURSE! THANK YOU HURST!

I was a nursing student in the BSN program at UT-Austin, graduating class of May 2014.  Thanks to my hard work during my live 3 day Hurst NCLEX-RN review I was able to pass my NCLEX on my first try in 75 questions.  In my opinion, Hurst NCLEX Review covers the general content you need to be able to tackle most NCLEX questions.  You're going to come out of the NCLEX exam feeling like it only covered a small fraction of what you studied but knowing the context from your Hurst Review book and taking their practice tests helps you develop the critical thinking skills you need to be able to apply your knowledge and answer a large percentage of the questions the NCLEX throws at you.  I did not use any other study method besides Hurst and I fully believe that the Hurst Review alone completely prepared me for taking my NCLEX exam.  Going to the review, filling out my study book (Hurst Review provides this to you), and accessing online lectures and extra materials after my live review was over proved to be extremely easy and convenient.  I had absolutely no issues there.  AND Hurst Review gives you access to some of their materials for up to a year after your review dates so you can use them even when you've started working!  As far as the actual live review experience, I would come in to the classrom from around 8am-4pm for three days straight and listen to a combination of lecture and video that was fun and engaging (no, I'm not kidding about this) and we took a 10 minute break every hour so it wasn't hard to stay focused at all (seriously!!).  I was provided a study book with all the material already inside of it and all I had to do was fill in the blanks, and if I missed any my instructor was always happy to help me fill in the ones I missed during those ten minute breaks.  Consequently, I felt extremely supported by my instructor the entire time.  I also utilized the online option to ask questions about the lectures after my review was over and I was promptly emailed individualized answers to all of my questions (some of the responses I got weren't too great/detailed but overall I had a great experience with this service).  I definitely think Hurst Review was worth how much I paid and a lot of hospitals will reimburse you for the cost of your review course once you start working so defintitely look into that!

ALSO:

My advice to anyone taking the NCLEX is that studying for this test is a highly individualized process and you should not spend too much time comparing your study methods/strategies to your friends. Know yourself, and know what you need in order to get the material down as far as methods of studying, studying in groups/alone, and how many hours you are capable of putting in each day. Make a plan and stick to it, that way you'll know you're going to get through all the material before the test. Know that you're NEVER going to feel totally ready to take the NCLEX and to a certain extent you just have to bite the bullet and pick your test date. Be sure to make time for fun things in the midst of all your hours of studying, otherwise you will get burned out. And last but not least, DO NOT study the day before your exam. You will end up stressing yourself out and probably have trouble getting to sleep that night. Relax and take a deep breath, if you payed attention to Hurst Review and Aunt Marlene, odds are you're going to be just fine.

I just wanted the "Hurst Review Staff" to know I passed my boards!!  The review was completely thorough and well worth the time I invested watching the videos and reviewing everything.  I walked into my exam anxious and nervous, BUT confident.   I had many questions where I could hear my professors and "Aunt Marlene" questioning my choice.  Marlene's voice was drilled in my head so I was prepared for every question.

Also, thank you for making the videos entertaining, pretty gals to keep me engaged, and comical to keep the stress off.  The Hurst Review staff was awesome and quick to answer questions I had when I called.  I even called the day before my exam because I was extremely nervous and the staff spoke with me to ease my anxiety and remind me that I would pass with flying colors!!

I was a student at Beaufort County Community College for the ADN program and just graduated this past May of 2014.  I had just been to our State nursing student association meeting with several other students and had taken the mini NCLEX review given and was impressed by Lisa Sanderson who was so energetic! Our nursing class voted to have a NCLEX reveiw held at our school and wanted to have choices so I did my research along with several other students and we ended up voting for HURST NCLEX review.

We had an awesome teacher Christy Anderson! She was energetic, approachable and was very informed on how to study the NCLEX.  Through the 3 day class we had to learn to approach the NCLEX in a different way that we had learned from our nursing classes. We still had to know content but without HURST we would have been thrown on how to answer these questions. Our class was extremely satisfied with the results.

I would highly recommend and do reccommend HURST anyone looking to take the NCLEX. We did the 3 day class review and used all the online resources.  One piece of advice...follow the rules that they give you..study the way they tell you.  They know what they are talking about!

I passed the NCLEX on the first try and within 75 questions.  So far, everyone from my class that took the HURST review has passed the NCLEX! It is well worth the money!!

I graduated in May 2014 with my BSN from LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans in the RN-BSN program. I took the Hurst Live Review and found it to be extremely vauge in comparison to what I had learned in school. This really concerned me. I thought, "is this actually going to be enough information to cover the bases for the exam?!" Needless to say I passed on my first try. I thought the online portion was wonderful because it recapped the live review. The practice exams take forever to take but they're extremely helpful with knowing if you have a good understanding of the overall material or not. Hurst review also provides access to extra material such as lab values, basic meds to know, vaccination schedules, and different precuations and PPE. Overall, I belive that if you don't have a good foundation of knowledge prior to taking this review course than I don't think you'd do well taking this review. It took the people from Hurst 48 hours to answer a question of mine and it was a response i deemed inadequate for the question I was asking. Very few questions on the NCLEX were related to material I had learned from HURST. I made an app purchase for $29.99 called NCLEX RN and i feel it made the world of a difference. So, Yes i feel Hurst is a good review but I wouldn't gurantee success on the test if one doesn't seek out further practice questions. ESPECIALLY practice questions regarding prioritization and delegation which were very lightly talked about in the Hurst review. I feel liek prioritization and delegation are SO important in our day and age because of time constraints, high patient loads, and lack of money. It is absolutely necessary for a nurse to know when and what is appropriate to delegate and how to do it. My teacher recommended a workbook of questions called "Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment" by the Evolve Elsevier company written by Linda A. LaCharity, Candice K. Kumagai, and Barbara Bartz. This workbook i HIGHLY recommend for anyone wanting to gurantee a pass the first time.

I found Hurst to be so user friendly and everyone to be so kind and helpful.  I loved the review classes Anna Bishop was amazing. She really was encouraging and explained everything so patiently and was so nice to me and all my classmates. She even brought us candy to keep us alert! Also your online services were amazing.  I always tell people I am not a computer person but it was so user friendly.  Even emailing Tonya about technical support she got back to me instantly with such clear directions.  It's been a pleasure, thank you so much for creating this program.  It really cleared up all lose ends for me and gave me the tools and confidence to pass the Nclex on my first try in 75 questions!

I graduated with my BSN in May and took NCLEX about 3-4 weeks after graduation, HURST was not offered readily in our area but I was approached in my 2nd to last semester to be a HURST representative for my university, an in class option was finally added to my area however I did not attend the class, I had seen some of the older videos of HURST and tried to use them when studying for my HESI exit exam, and I felt they weren't helpful to me. HURST provides need to know information over certain areas like OB, Peds, Med Surg, ect. It is almost like they packed nursing school into 15 videos or so, now while this is really helpful for some people for me I was like I don't need someone to go back over nursing school I want practice questions and tests where if I don't know the answers or get one wrong I am given the resources to look it up. While HURST does provide this to an extent I felt it wasn't enough to provide me with the knowledge base I needed to pass HESI so I didn't think it would help me with NCLEX, I do know several people who swear by HURST and loved every second of it. You can take either the in class or online verison depending on your area of the country your in, HURST in class review sessions are not offered in as many places as some other reviews. HURST does offer a money back gaurantee so if for any reason you don't pass the NCLEX you can get the money spent back, compared to other reviews the price for Hurst is pretty similiar.

I went to nursing school at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton TX. It is a BSN Program. I went to the live review and have used the online content to review. The content in this review is amazing. It took my entire nursing educational career and put it into a three day course. It was absolutely amazing. I felt that this review fully prepared me for the NCLEX. I would totally recommend this review to anyone that wants to pass the NCLEX. Technical support when needed is beyond convenient. The cost for this review is a drop in the bucket when u think about how much you have paid for nursing school and how important this test.
